Delivery story 66

The Stiffer from Hell.

I used to deliver for a pizza store near Northern Kentucky University. After being on the job for about 3 weeks, I noticed one particular customer placed the exact order every Wednesday and Friday - two hoagies and a large pizza. The customer was a woman with about 4 kids. They lived on a third floor apartment above a store, located on the edge of our delivery zone. On a Friday night, it took about 20 minutes to get there. Most of my deliveries were in the opposite direction, so it was almost always a 40-minute round trip for this one delivery.

Her total came to $17.40 - something. She always paid with a twenty, and stood there in the doorway with her fat hand out waiting for every penny back in change. Then she closed the door without even saying a thank you. I groaned every time I saw her last name on the delivery ticket.

After about the fourth delivery to her home, I decided to try something to get a tip without being rude. I got two rolls of nickels from the cash register, emptied them loosely into my fanny pack, and stuck all of my paper change in my pocket. When I got to her apartment, she handed me the $20. I opened up my change bag and faked a surprised look. I said, "I'm sorry, ma'am, I forgot to get more singles before I left the store. I have enough coins, though, to give you your change." I figured she would say, "Don't worry about it. Keep the change." I at least expected her to take a few quarters and call it even.

Instead, she stood there while I counted out 40 nickels, two quarters and some pennies. I guess some people just don't "get it," do they?

It's been a few years since I delivered, but I swear -- if I knew where this woman lived now, I'd make sure she visited tipthepizzaguy.com. She could learn a few things about human decency from your website.
