Delivery story 59

Papa Doc writes:

I deliver with Domino's Pizza in a small, rural town near Lafayette, Louisiana. At least 40% of the customers live in mobile homes of varying degrees of disrepair out in the sugar cane fields. Louisiana is a poor state and some of these people are the poorest of the poor.

I had a delivery to a trailer out in the boonies one February night with a cold wind blowing off the bayou. After finding the trailer I knocked on the door and waited. And waited. Inside I could hear the sound of many feet stampeding back and forth past the door; anyone who has delivered to a trailer knows this sound. Finally the door opens and a male face pokes out: "How much is it?" Actually what came out sounded like "How muh chi'it?"

Me: "$14.65."

Slam! The door bangs shut without another word and there is more sounds of small feet stampeding back and forth.

Another male face pokes out: "How muh chi'it?"

Me: "$14.65."

Slam! The door bangs shut again and there is the sound of more stampeding feet from within.

Door opens again and a female head pokes out and asks in slightly more coherant English. "How much is it?"

Me: "$14.65."

She: "Will you take a check?"

Me: "Sure."

Door slams shut again without a word.

Same face pokes out again, indicates another trailer nearby and says with a charming smile, "Go over there and ask her to pay for it!"

Me: "I'm not going anywhere. You ordered it; you get to pay for it.

Door slams shut again without a word.

Door opens again and the female brushes past me without a Hello, Good bye, or Kiss my ass, and consults with the neighbor indicated earlier. Female comes back without prying any cash from the neighbor and hands me a check that she had obviously made out earlier. For $14.54 exactly of course, no tip. Jive-ass swamp-stomping trailer-trash! They will kill for Cheezy Bread but would rather die than give a tip.
