I have been delivering for over ten years now and I have 100s of funny stories. I deliver for Papa Johns in Winston-Salem, NC. I have delivered in extremes of temperatures from 7 degrees to 103 degrees. I think of the guy I delivered to when I was a newbie and had only been delivering a few months. It was late on New Year's Eve and when he came to the door, he took a wad of money out of his wallet and threw the wallet to the floor and asked what was the biggest tip I ever had. He was going to beat it! At that time it was $7 and he beat that.
I was delivering to one of those 3-story apartment buildings that have two sets of stairs. Some letters aren't used and I climbed three flights only to find I should have used the other stairs. I climbed down and back up the other stairs only to find nobody home. When I climbed back down, I noticed I was in the wrong building and went to the right building and climbed three flights of stairs again. My other delivery back in the car was to the same complex two flights up. On that one run, I was gone from the store less than 15 minutes and climbed 11 flights of stairs.
I went to the door of a big house and the boy came to the door with a handful of money to pay. He gave me some of the money and, as I walked back to the car, I noticed an extra $10 bill was stuck to another $10 bill and it was obvious that he did not mean for me to have it. Being an honest man, I walked right back up and knocked on the door. The Dad was right at the door when I knocked and he came to the door and I said, "Your son gave me an extra ten dollars that he didn't mean to." As I held the money, the man took it and didn't say a word, not even a thank you as he closed the door back!
I also think about the night I turned into a driveway and it was being repaved and I got stuck, or the lady who ordered a small pizza late at night and came to the door brushing her teeth. Why is it if you get to the door earlier than people thought you would, they don't have their porch light on yet or money ready? What are they waiting for? Why wait to get ready for the pizza guy instead of getting ready as soon as you are done ordering!
