I just finished reading all the stories and I feel the need to tell you about a friend of mine. I have been delivering pizza for five years now. Even though Pizza Hut is in competition with three other stores, all the drivers in our small area know each other. Even if we don't know names, we at least know each other on sight.
Anyway, on December 18, 2001, John Horan called his wife, around midnight, to tell her he had one more delivery to make and then he would be home. Unfortunately, John didn't make it home that night. He was murdered. Always striving for sales, the on-duty manager took an order from a payphone. Now, normally this is against policy, but the store was lacking in sales and management and was told to take every order regardless. John took the pizzas and headed to a high-crime area near the store. When he arrived, three people grabbed him from behind, bound him with duct tape, gagged him, and threw him into the back seat of his own 1994 Nissan Sentra. They drove him to a deserted side street and threw him in a ditch. As they drove away, John loosened his restraints and began to run. He was shot in the back. He was found in the middle of the street a short time later by a trucker and then he died. Two people have been arrested and are awaiting trial. One is still on the loose.
My point is we all have funny stories, and maddening stories about getting stiffed, but it is a very dangerous job. As a female, I deal with much more frightening situations than my male counterparts. I have been threatened, surrounded, and scared to the point I almost had to run people over to get them away from me. We go into areas that a police officer won't go without a bulletproof vest, a gun, and a partner. We truly work hard for our tips and are put in life threatening situations almost on a daily basis. To all the drivers out there, trust your gut and stay safe!
