Delivery story 402

Shuck writes:

I've been driving for my shop for almost two years now. And I've seen a lot of generous as well as a lot of stiff customers. My boss however, is very inconsiderate, so he usually gets us delivering rather far when understaffed.

Anyways, here in Virginia Beach we have a Hispanic family that has ordered with us for awhile now. They used to live about two miles up the street. They have a HUGE family and generally order no less than $50.00 worth of food. However, every week they order and I bring them this colossal order regularly and I have never once seen a tip. They are super stiff. I've accepted this.

Well, a few months ago they moved. In fact they moved more than twice the distance of our delivery range, but my boss insists that because they order a s%&t load of food very regularly, that we must still go. Fine. Whatever.

The problem is that they always call during rush hour and it now takes instead of 5-10 minutes tops to get to them, it now takes 30-50 minutes depending on traffic. What this does is delay all other deliveries every week. Of course this leads to a domino effect of 'kill the messenger.' We take the heat for late orders.

Well, today I had to go bring them $83.40 of food. This is an 8-mile trip to and then 8 miles back. I then have to go roughly another five miles the opposite direction to an area that can only be accessed by side roads, so it's very time consuming and annoying. Having this run doesn't make my life easier for routes like this.

So I got really fed up when I got there. They made me hold this heavy order outside for five minutes, while someone located a $100 bill. My back and shoulders were killing me. So the brother of the family is paying and I hear him say, "Los oi en el telefono que hablaba de nosotros que eran baratos al conductor de la entrega." Or that she overheard us talking about them being cheap, followed by her brother laughing and saying, "Nunca les damos el dinero adicional. Por que comienzo ahora?" or, "Why bother? We never do!" They didn't realize I spoke/understood Spanish, so I was pretty pissed off.

So I said, "Usted realiza cuanto alimento es cada semana esta? Usted nunca me compensa, yo lo siente." Or, "Sorry, you guys don't ever tip, and this is a lot of food."

So the sister said, "Oh... yea, I know. I'm sorry." She gives me a $100 bill and says, "OK, well, you can give me back sixteen dollars and keep the sixty cents out of that dollar then I guess."

Needless to say I am pissed. I dent my gas tank every time I try to get there on time. And my frustration has grown to the point that now I wish to retaliate. People need to understand you can't do that to people. If you have $100 to buy delivery with each week, you can at least be nice enough to tip that minimal 10%. Because I'll be noting that either I'm not bringing the food anymore, or you're getting a surprise next time.

I'm really not an a$$hole or anything, but it's people like this that dumb the world down. I'm willing to bet they are under the impression that because they order every week, they do not need to tip. Again... kill the messenger... why?

Nothing more than a frustrated statement but... people need to remember that: We remember addresses and information. If you get mailed a box of s%&t, it's not our fault you're an a$$hole consistently.
