One Sunday afternoon we got an order to a kids play place at the local mall. I got there in about 30 minutes to find the customers had not yet shown up for their child's birthday party.
I called the cell phone number given on the ticket and the woman said, "Oh, I thought it would take you guys an hour since I ordered so many pizzas." She had been told 30 to 35 minutes on the phone. I took her order.
I waited another 20 minutes for them to show up as I was not about to come back out to the mall and walk all the way back in.
When she finally arrived she asked me the total. $78.86. I told her and she began to write a check. She handed me the check and I noticed it was written for $80, a whopping $1.14 tip!
I immediately grabbed my money from my pocket and said, "Please, let me get you your change!"
She said, "Aren't I supposed to tip the pizza guy?"
To which I responded, "Yes, I accept tips... but this is not a tip. This is an insult. Sunday is our busiest day and I know I've missed out on at least three orders while waiting for you. You enjoy those pizzas and I hope your child has a good birthday."
And then I added, "And I don't have any pennies, so here's a dollar fifteen!"
If she was there when I got there to begin with and had written me that check I would have accepted the small tip and been on my way... but wow!
