I work for an independent place in Ithaca, NY and one summer night we had a relatively large $75 order to the Home Depot for 10 PM. The store was closed, so I figured the food was for the night crew. I called the number on the ticket twice with no answer both times. After consulting my boss, I find out the order was actually for a customer who used to order from us frequently when he lived in Ithaca, but was now in Enfield, almost 12 miles away. Normally, we wouldn't go to a parking lot, but since Ithaca is relatively safe and the parking lot in question well lit with a police presence, she was okay sending me there.
Eventually I did get through to the customer's cell phone, and despite his specific request for a ten o'clock delivery, he was only just leaving his house at 10:15. At 10:30, he and his girlfriend finally arrived, and took a whole ten minutes to find my vehicle (even though I was parked right near the lot entrance with my lights on and a big hot bag on top of my car.)
It doesn't stop there. This guy was a jerk from the moment he stepped out of his jeep, complaining that our food sucked and was overpriced. He also signed his signature three times on the credit card ticket: once on the tip line, once on the total line, and once on the signature line to emphasize the fact that I wasn't getting a tip. His explanation was that apparently it was my fault he had to drive 12 miles to get his food and that our delivery radius should be larger. I lost an entire hour's worth of deliveries for a whopping 50 cent gas reimbursement.
After that incident my boss said absolutely never again would we do that again, and blacklisted the customer in question.
