It was late at night. I was delivering to a place that I had been to several times. Upon arriving I rang and waited. No answer. I could see through the front door window somebody sitting in a recliner. Maybe he was asleep. I rang again and a little dog started yapping. The guy still did not budge. I went back to my car, got my cell, and called. His phone rang through to the answering machine. Dog still yapping away and jumping on and off the chair with the guy in it. Still no response.
I started to get a little worried. I dialed again, put my cell in my pocket, waited until his phone began to ring, opened the door and started pounding on the wall inside with one hand while ringing the bell with the other. Meanwhile, the little dog continued yapping away, jumping on and off this guy and the chair. The dog even ran over his face a few times. I did not need any more convincing. Obviously the guy was dead or dying. I called 911 and then my store.
Sheriff deputies arrived, followed closely by fire and rescue. The deputies shined a big maglite on the guy's face and eyes. Nothing. One remarked that it didn't look like he was breathing. Paramedics entered and they saw the same thing. It turns out he was still breathing but very shallow due to excessive alcohol consumption. After some time and work they managed to awaken him.
I called the store and the manager in charge said he already zeroed out the order, so I just gave it to the sap after telling him what happened. My reward for possibly saving this clown and letting him have his dinner for free? NADA. No tip. Nothing. Guess the closest thing was the WTF look on his face when he awoke to see three deputies, four fire rescuers, and one pizza delivery guy standing over his recliner looking down at him.
