I was working for an Round Table in Santa Cruz. I was the shift manager and there was only one driver left because it was only a few minutes until closing. While he was out, I got a call just moments after we regularly closed delivery. I thought 'I'll be nice and take this order if they're close.' I found out she was across town, even about half a block out of our delivery area, but she was really nice and had some sob story about having to work all night, so I ended up taking it anyway.
She sounded like a tipper to me. I had the pizza ready when the driver got back, and he made such a stink about having to take another delivery and how people have been rude and cheap all night that I almost took it myself. He did end up taking the pizza out when I told him it was that or mopping the floor.
He got back well after we were closed, and I was sure he was going to be grumpy at me for the rest of the night, which would have made it a pain to get him to do all his closing stuff. He actually danced into the restaurant. He sang a little song to me about how he loves the world and all the awesome customers in it. She had given him a $50 tip on a $25 order. It was a cash order, so I didn't think she had stolen the money. The story the driver gave me was that she had felt so bad about making him come all they way out there that she really wanted to make it worth his while. He split the tip in half with me because I had made him go.
