I was delivering pizzas late one winter night for East of Chicago Pizza in Dayton, Ohio. I had only been delivering for about a month. The neighborhood I delivered in was very suburban. I was on what I thought would be one of my last deliveries of the evening as it was around 1 AM.
I pulled up to the average ranch style house and walked up to the door. Before I got to the porch, I heard footsteps coming from the side of the house. As I looked up, I saw two young men with pantyhose over their heads and aluminum baseball bats fully cocked running towards me. At that point I dropped the pizza and prepared to be struck with the bats.
The guys didn't hit me. Instead they demanded the money. I quickly pulled out my money pouch and tossed it on the ground at their feet. The guys grabbed the pouch and then demanded ALL the money. That was all the money but I think they wanted my wallet, too. I told them it was all I had and they quickly took off running. I was afraid that with no signs of physical assault, the company would think I had something to do with it. But my manager and the owner were really nice and understanding about it.
I had to stay an extra couple of hours filing the police report and taking the cops back to the scene of the crime so the police dogs could try to get a scent on the guys. No luck. The cops told me I was the first pizza delivery guy to be robbed in that neighborhood in ten years. Lucky me.
It turns out the cops did eventually bust the guys a week or so later when they tried to pull the same stunt. But this time the cops got them by simply following their footprints through the snow, back to their house. What morons! The guys not only got busted for the pizza robberies but they also got busted for some earlier car break-ins. They went away for a long time. Serves 'em right.
