I worked as a delivery guy for Pizza Hut in Northern Virginia for 2 years. It was a good gig and the managers were really cool, especially since I was a minimum 15 years older than all of them.
Now I've read through these stories and can relate on most of them. But I've got one that I don't think anyone is going to match.
I had just bought a used, blue Neon to replace my worn out Buick. It was 10:45 at night and I was on my last set of deliveries. It was pouring monsoon-like rain and I slowed down to go around a particularly vicious curve. WHAM! I got tailgated and spun off the road. I came to a stop in somebody's yard or ditch, but was able to see the offender slow down, look at me, then peel out. I got a really, really good look at that neon yellow Mustang as he zoomed away. Lucky for me, some Good Samaritans happened by and we were able to pull my "new" Neon out with their 4x4s.
After making certain I was okay, and there was no major damage to my car, I continued to finish my delivery run. Imagine my surprise when I arrived at my last delivery and find the SAME neon yellow Mustang parked in the drive. I saw red, but went up to the door to deliver anyway. This guy came to the door and saw my Neon in the drive. He about fainted. I gave him the bill, which he paid (no tip.) Then I asked him who was driving the Mustang. He muttered that he didn't know. (Hello! It is the ONLY vehicle at the house!) So I told him that it didn't matter, I was calling the police, and would wait in my car until they showed. This made him get REALLY pale. He immediately started apologizing and trying to explain why he left the scene of an accident. (Major misdemeanor in Virginia.) I listen to all this crap, then cut to the chase: How are you going to make it worth my while to NOT call the cops? He started by offering me $50, but I laughed at him and told him my deductible was $500. He finally offered to pony up $300. I agreed, then he tried to pull out a checkbook on me. I DON'T THINK SO: checks from chickenshit like him tend to bounce! I demanded cash or I call the cops.
He managed to scrape up $285 and I let the matter slide. I took the car to my brother's body shop the next day; total damage: lots of mud and some paint transfer on the back bumper. Repair cost: $5. Hard way to get $280 but I earned it for sure.
