Delivery story 100

I've noticed that most of the stories tend to revolve around nut job customers, as most of my experiences did. There are exceptions to this though.

I was delivering for Little Caesar's in Gardendale about a year ago when I took an order from a family who ordered a couple of times a month and tipped fairly well. I walked up to the door and I noticed they have a new yellow lab. It seemed friendly enough, wagging its tail and getting underfoot as I go up to the door. I rang the bell, got the money, and started back to my car. The dog went absolutely insane, barking and growling enough to make Cujo look like Benji. I stopped walking, and between barks I heard this rattling sound. I looked down carefully and about a foot away there was an average sized rattlesnake in the gravel driveway. Recent flooding had run the snake out of its usual habitat by a local creek.

By now, the owner came out because of the dog's barking and I called out for a hoe or shovel, anything to get between me and the snake. She threw me a shovel and the snake struck at the metal base as I caught the shovel. When the snake struck and recoiled, I cut off its head with the shovel. I delivered there a couple of other times after that, but all the others were nice quiet deliveries.
