I don't have a good answer for your question, except to say that I know exactly what you're talking about! Race and gender are the most important factors when predicting a gratuity. Level of service is meaningless. NO amount of excellent service will cause the median black woman's gratuity to equal the median East Asian man's. (the best tippers by a good margin; though they seldom order pizza) Those of us that understand the business know that we are assigned our deliveries on a first come first served rotational basis with the other drivers, and don't waste our time discriminating by race...just get it to them, and get on with your life. If you are black and reading this, don't be concerned about us slowing down for you. We aren't. Think of it this way: more "at bats" equals more chances at a base hit. If we waste our time slowing down, we are hurting only ourselves. The only time it affects you is if you are are a known "stiff", and we are busy, then your pizza comes last! Follow up: The differences go far beyond tipping though. Black customers tend to order pizzas devoid of vegetables. "Meat eaters", "Meat Combinations", "Meat Lovers", (though the last one is Pizza Hut's nick for it). I've heard all massacres of the name. Bottom Line: If the customers name appears black, or I spoke with them personally and am sure they are black, I approach with low expectations. (and no Parmesan cheese!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Minorites, at least in general, tend to be lower on the economic scale and thus can't afford it. This means they shouldn't be ordering in the first place, I know. The big problem with economics theory is that many rich people don't tip. You deliver to half-million dollar houses and often get stiffed. There must be more to it than economics. The ones we do have tip pretty good, but they are also in a higher "class" (standard of living) than the stereotype. The ones that stiff me 9.99 times out of 10 are the Hispanics. The trailer park, 6 cars parked around their trailer, windows broken out, garbage everywhere, kids running around half naked and dirty type. I don't know, I think it's not the color of their skin, but the economic status. When they live like trash, they think like trash and don't tip. And by the way, you can tell the difference in the ones who live in the trashy trailer parks but don't live like trash...they take care of their homes and kids and there's a subtle difference. Even though they don't have a lot of money, they don't live and think like they are trash. There are a few of these, and they usually tip a little bit anyway. I would delivery to the same house another driver would, and I would never get tip, and he would, cause he was black. But that went the same way, I would be tip by mid-upper class white folks, and he wouldnt. AND no matter what anyone says, most upper class folks never tip (the cheapos). Tipping is not based on service, not based on anything except, what you look like when you get there, and what you are driving. Plain and simple. I use to drive up in my nice little protege, but as soon as I got in a car accident (on a delivery mind you) and my car looked like crap, I was being tip by different folk. Maybe its because im a fat white guy? :) >>i delivered a 100 dollar order to a "black church" and recieved a 5 dollar tip, basically 5%... but hey, 3 bags of pizzas and a few two liters carried down 2 flights of stairs and across a large building is only worth 5 bucks right? oh well... at least he tipped at all. but we have one guy who orders pizza, and he loves to tip well, and give you an extra "tip"... haha, he has various religious pamphlets which he will give you. its always a check for exact amount, a 5 dollar bill, and the pamphlet... I think we all know that tipping is based mainly in family customs. So, to say that black people don't tip, it's probably because they don't understand that they're expected to do more than give you the change (not that they would change based on what you tell them). How this started, I don't know. I would disagree with anyone saying that blacks tip better than whites of similar socio-economic backgrounds. I have worked with drivers of both races (as if that's a logical distinction in the first place, as it's certainly not scientific) and they all recieved better tips from whites rather than blacks of any class. Oddly enough, I seem to get the best tips from Hispanics ($5 or more average). They all go out of their way to be nice. Perhaps they want to compensate for the language barrier. Personally, I only get angry at a customer when they intend malice in their stiffing. When they do that, I take all reasonable measures in insuring their pizza delivery is as unpleasent as possible. I'll call known stiffers to ask for directions just to make them get up and answer their phone, then if they have a check, I'll make them write out every single worthless piece of personal information. I especially enjoy it when they have credit card slips to sign. Then I can ask them to "sign and total" the slip. If they don't write anything for tip, I ask them to "write a zero in the tip section", saying it's company policy just so no one can alter their total. Sometimes they'll notice they forgot to tip, or they'll notice that they should tip. But if they don't tip, they have plenty of time to see the look on your face telling them that you're angry they didn't.
